My credit card balance is over 50%. How long will it take my credit score to go back up?

Hi. I recently just got my first credit card ever and used it to make a $1600 purchase. The credit limit is $3000, so obviously I’m over 50% of the balance, and I just learned that’s bad for credit scores. I expect to be able to pay off the purchase in the next two or three months. Will my credit score go back up immediately after I get the balance on my card down, or will it take a while? Thanks.Submited by:Casey

How can you raise you credit score even when you pay on time?

Ok, past credit messed me up. I have a judgement thats almost paid off. I am trying to raise my credit score.I have 3 new accounts that I’ve paid on time for over 1 year. I read that one way to raise your score is to ” piggy back” on a relatives good credit ( have them add me to one of their good accounts and not use it) Is this safe, is it legal. I would love to hear constructive ways to increase my credit score. Please don’t judge me. Almost all of my ” bad” credit accounts have been paid off. I put my sons first when the divorce came. They lived in the house that I paid for while I lived in a basement.Submited by:amhjp1820

What are the details on using half your credit affecting on your credit score?

I know that when you have a balance that is over half your credit limit, it hurts your score. Question is, let’s say I have 3 cards that have a 10,000 limit and I have no balance on two, but 8,000 on one, will this hurt? Does credit constitute all available credit, so 8,000 out of 30,000 is OK and my credit will not suffer? I never understood the details. Thanks for the help.Submited by:AFGuY16

What credit card would you recommend for someone trying to re-establish good credit history?

Tamborine asked:

I have decent credit but I had cancelled all my cards when trying to get out of debt. I am now free of all unsecured debt but I need to have a card so in the future I won’t be hurt by having no credit.

I’m thinking I want a card with no annual fee and a low APR. The card would only be used very occassionally and paid off immediately. I have no desire to repeat previous mistakes.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good card for this purpose?
Okay, as I said, but everyone is skipping, is that I have decent credit. My credit score is 700.

When I got into trouble I went into debt consolidation right away BEFORE my credit got screwed up.

But I do appreciate those of you who are taking the time to answer.

How and why is my credit card affected when I open and close a credit card?

I see a great deal at a store to open up a credit card and get a prize or a rebate. If I want the big discount I open the credit card and then get the discount but I don’t want or need the credit card at all.

Is it better to close down this new card or keep it open with a zero balance? How does opening and closing account affect my credit score?Submited by:Double Negative

How fast is your credit score affected by changes in credit utilization?

great_and_mighty_adam_levine asked:

Basically, how current is the credit agencies records?

Under normal conditions, my credit utilizaiton varies wildly.

When applying for credit, I generally want 10-20% credit utilization. I can make that happen, but I wanted to know:

How long after I make it 10-20% should I apply for credit?
How long do I need to hold my credit utilization at 10-20%?

What is my credit score going to be if I pay off the highest balance CC to avoid interest rate jump?

I have recently been notified that my interest rate is going up because of an overdraft, but I’m considering paying off this card and closing it: it is one of my oldest cards. How would it affect my credit score? Any other suggestions for what to do? Thanks!
