How am I supposed to get credit without going into debt?

I’m a college student so i’m already strapped for cash and I’ve managed to be able to keep from getting a loan. I really need a car but I have no credit. I need a phone but I need credit. I have been taught my whole life not to get loans and credit cards so what am I supposed to do?
